On Monday (July 1st), the Head of the Provincial Statistics Indonesia (BPS) of Sumatera Selatan, along with the Acting Governor of Sumatera Selatan, Elen Setiadi, S.H., M.S.E, released updates on strategic indicators, including inflation, the farmer's exchange rate, export and import data, tourism, transportation, poverty profile, and the level of income inequality.
In June 2024, Sumatera Selatan experienced a year-on-year (y-o-y) inflation rate of 2.48 percent, with a Consumer Price Index (CPI) of 106.42. Meanwhile, on a month-to-month (m-o-m) basis, the province saw a deflation of 0.03 percent. The commodities that contributed to the m-o-m deflation in June 2024 included shallots, tomatoes, garlic, broiler chicken meat, and catfish.
The number of poor people in March 2024 was 984.24 thousand, a decrease of 61.4 thousand compared to March 2023. Meanwhile, the income inequality level in Sumatera Selatan, measured by the Gini Ratio, was 0.333. This figure decreased by 0.005 points compared to the Gini Ratio in March 2023, which was 0.338.
The event was also attended by the assistant for economic, financial, and development affairs, along with several heads of provincial departments (OPD) in Sumatera Selatan. The event began with the release from the Central Statistics Indonesia (BPS RI), followed by the release from the Head of the Sumatera Selatan Statistics Indonesia, and concluded with remarks from the Acting Governor of Sumatera Selatan.
In his remarks, he stated that, in general, the strategic indicators in Sumatera Selatan are good, but attention is needed to maintain the stability of food prices, the downstream processing of export products, the enhancement of MICE in the tourism sector, and the maintenance of poverty levels in the future. He also emphasized the importance of cooperation with BPS, as BPS calculates the indicators neutrally, meaning if the indicators rise or fall, the government needs to assess what actions are necessary. At the end of the event, he expressed his gratitude for the cooperation with BPS and noted that this release event would continue to be held regularly, allowing for better control over the economy and welfare activities in Sumatera Selatan.
